After Jonas, beware of black ice

SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va. — While Winter Storm Jonas passed through West Virginia and left feet of snow in many areas, it’s impact may still be felt in the coming days.

Central West Virginia and the Eastern Mountains could see temperatures in the 40s Monday and Tuesday, but temperatures at night are expected drop down close to freezing.

State Farm spokesperson Dave Phillips warns drivers that the potential for unseen black ice will remain as long as snow remains on the ground.

“The next several days are probably going to be the more severe,” he said. “And as we get away from this storm, the potential will reduce. But it’s always out there. As long as the roadways are wet, there is the potential for freeze and the potential for black ice.”

There is also potential for rain in some of these areas moving into Tuesday.

“As long as any part of the roadway continues to be wet–even if you’re seeing snow mounds on the side but the roadway is dry–that snow still has to eventually melt and may still find it’s way on the road ways,” Phillips added.

Phillips advises drivers to pay close attention to the roads–particularly at night when it may be harder to predict where stretches of the ice are located.

“Use caution knowing that the black ice could be anywhere,” he said. “The problem is that it’s not always visible. So even if you think that you know where some of these patches may be, you may not.”

According to Phillips, there are several warning signs that can help you in determining any danger posed from black ice during your drive.

“Take a look at the absence of water spray coming from other cars, cars in front of you that may swerve or skid, heavy break light activity further on down the road,” he said. “If you’re traveling in an area and starting to see there are some car or tire tracks that go off the road and then back on, that’s also indicative of black ice.”

If all else fails, Phillips advised remaining calm if you start to lose control of your vehicle; sudden movement of the steering wheel can create even more danger.

“What you should remember is: recognize the conditions, detect warning signs, and stay calm should you encounter it.”
