HS boys basketball MetroNews Power Index: Week 5

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The week five edition of the high school boys basketball MetroNews Power Index computer rankings was released on Wednesday.

Martinsburg (13-2) continued its recent climb, jumping undefeated Huntington (13-0) for the overall No. 1 spot. The Bulldogs’ 803.30 strength of schedule ranks third best in the entire state, which ultimately bumped them up. Both of Martinsburg’s two losses on the year came to national programs in a Hawaii tournament as the Bulldogs remain undefeated in the Mountain State.

Two of Huntington’s three wins over the past week came over 3-win Nitro and 3-win Spring Valley, which dropped the Highlanders’ overall schedule strength just enough for Martinsburg to make the jump.

Martinsburg’s No. 1 ranking sets up a top three battle in Morgantown on Saturday as the Mohigans are at No. 3, still undefeated with a 13-0 record. Capital (11-2) is No. 4 and Hedgesville (12-2) is No. 5, followed by Musselman (11-2) and Woodrow Wilson (11-1). The highest rated Class AA team is Bridgeport (9-0) at No. 8.

Notre Dame (10-1) remains the highest rated Class A program at No. 19, followed by No. 22 Wheeling Central. The Maroon Knights (13-1) lost for the first time this year, falling to defending state champion Magnolia (9-2) within the past week.

The MetroNews Power Index is a computer based formula that factors in strength of schedule. Records listed are for games played through Tuesday, February 2.

This is the 30th year for the MetroNews Power Index, powered by MVB Bank and 31st season that MetroNews will broadcast the WVSSAC state championship games.
