CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A major problem for commuters traveling through Charleston Monday.

Traffic was diverted for a time while crews worked to repair a broken expansion joint on the I-64 Eugene A. Carter Memorial bridge crossing the Kanawha River.

Ten vehicles hit the joint and had their tires flattened as they passed by. Only one lane of the busy three-lane interstate, the busiest stretch of interstate in the state, will be open for most of Monday.

It couldn’t have happened at a worse time, around 7:30 a.m., just as the heaviest rush hour traffic coming into Charleston from the west was rolling up on the bridge.
