WVU Coliseum set to reopen following asbestos testing

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Commencement ceremonies will remain in the WVU Coliseum later this month.

According to WVU Director of Environmental Health & Safety John Principe, tests following the discovery of asbestos “met regulatory clearance levels for occupancy.”

Friday afternoon, workers found what they thought was asbestos containing material in the ceiling near concourse restrooms.

University officials have maintained the asbestos was contained and never posed a threat to workers, visitors or athletes at the coliseum.

The area where it was found is sealed off as a precaution and for further removal.

Tuesday, May 3, access inside is available through the red gate only. Regular business will resume in the coliseum and for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Commencement activities are scheduled for May 13-15.

Contractors are in the middle of a $15 million renovation project.
