WESTON, W.Va. — A recount of the state Senate race in the 12th Senatorial District was completed Tuesday with Sen. Doug Facemire maintaining a lead over challenger Franklin Cornette.
The last county to finish up in the multi-county district was Lewis County where Cornette gained 19 votes. Facemire gained nine. That put the final numbers at a 94 vote lead for Facemire. He had a 100 vote lead over Cornette following the Nov. 8 General Election.
Cornette requested the recount. He trailed by four additional votes following recounts in Harrison, Clay and Braxton counties.
In Harrison County, Cornette lost four votes on his original total following the recount. Facemire lost six votes.
More than 27,000 people cast ballots for either Cornette or Facemire in Harrison County.
In Clay County, Facemire’s total remained unchanged. Cornette lost one vote.
In Braxton County, Facemire picked up 10 votes. Cornette picked up five.
The 12th district includes parts of Harrison, Braxton, Lewis, Clay, and Gilmer counties.
No recounts were requested in Gilmer County.
The election results still must be certified.
