Six vehicle accident shuts down most of I-79 near state line

MONONGALIA COUNTY, W.Va. — All four lanes of I-79 were temporarily shut down north of Morgantown following a six-vehicle accident late Tuesday afternoon.

It’s unclear what led to the accident, but at least four vehicles were stranded in the north bound roadway. North bound is expected to be shut down into the evening hours. One lane reopened north bound just before 6:00 p.m.

Dispatchers believe one person was injured and transported to the hospital.

One lane south bound on I-79 near mile marker 160 reopened about half an hour after the accident.

MECCA 911 dispatchers are asking commuters to avoid the area. The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department is investigating.
