Morgantown man in custody following South Park shooting

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — One person is behind bars while a Morgantown man recovers from a Monday night shooting in a residential neighborhood.

Chance Williams, 18, of Morgantown, is in custody and facing numerous charges following the shooting near the 800 block of Grand Street Monday night in the South Park neighborhood. Police discovered Williams with blood on his pants on neighboring Webster Street. They also said Williams’s appearance was consistent with that of someone who had been in a physical altercation.

Marquise Hicks, 23, of Morgantown, is being treated for multiple gunshot wounds. He is in stable condition at Ruby Memorial Hospital. The shooting was called in at approximately 10:22 p.m. Monday.

Williams allegedly attempted to provide a false name and was not cooperative with Morgantown Police officers. He is also accused of attempting to destroy any evidence of gunshot residue by using disinfectant gel.

Williams is charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, obstructing an officer, trespassing, public intoxication, and underage consumption of alcohol. No charges have yet been filed connected to the shooting.
