Senate Finance Committee passes free community college bill

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Senate Finance Committee passed Wednesday the bill regarding free community and technical college in the state.

Gov. Jim Justice and Senate President Mitch Carmichael, R-Jackson, support Senate Bill 284, which now heads to the Senate floor. The governor’s proposed budget sets aside $7 million to fund tuition, fees and other forms of financial aid.

The Senate Education Committee passed its version Tuesday, which removed the requirement that a student had to be 20 years old or enrolled in a high school-based Advanced Career Education program to receive funding.

The Finance Committee passed the bill Wednesday in a voice note with no opposition.
