Sh’Nia Gordon lifts West Virginia over Saint Francis in Big 12 tuneup

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.  — After 71 scoreless minutes, Sh’Nia Gordon put West Virginia ahead and Jordan Brewster tacked on an insurance goal for a 2-0 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday.

The Mountaineers (4-2-3) have won three straight as they enter Big 12 Conference play.

For the second consecutive match, the defense did not allow a shot, the first back-to-back whitewashes in the program’s 23-year history.

Saint Francis (2-6-2) also did not earn a corner kick.

Gordon’s second goal in as many matches followed a pass from Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel.

“You have to give a lot of credit to Saint Francis – they did everything they could to disrupt us,” WVU coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “I love to see that Nia had the ability to lead us and get that finish. This is a confidence opportunity for her, and I hope she understands she has the ability to finish and lead us in the attack. I’m thrilled that the shots are falling for her.”

WVU put it away in the 78th minute when Alina Stahl, posted at the penalty line, turned and sent a pass wide to Brewster, who immediately put her shot on-frame. The ball bounced off the head of an SFU defender at the goal line before falling into the back of the net.

Mountaineers junior Rylee Foster earned credit for the shutout, her third of the season and the 23rd of her career.

West Virginia visits Texas Tech on Friday night.
