Four-star New Jersey lineman Chris Mayo commits to West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia’s future offensive line will come with a generous portion of Mayo.

Chris Mayo, a four-star offensive lineman from Richland, N.J., committed to the Mountaineers on Saturday.

Mayo is rated as a four-star recruit by Rivals. He is the highest-rated player to give Brown a verbal commitment in the Class of 2020. Rivals upgraded quarterback Garrett Greene to a four-star prospect after his commitment.

Mayo chose West Virginia over Kentucky. He had also received heavy interest from Purdue, Arizona State and Auburn.

The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Mayo has played both guard and tackle at The Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J. He is the No. 10 overall prospect in New Jersey according to Rivals. The Mountaineers have already added a commitment from New Jersey defensive end Aaron Lewis (No. 16 in state) and are also trying to woo inside linebacker Tirek Austin-Cave.

Mayo was recruited by running backs coach Chad Scott and offensive line coach Matt Moore. Scott is WVU’s primary recruiter in southern New Jersey, and had begun recruiting Mayo while he was still on the staff at North Carolina.

Moore has a preference for splitting offensive linemen into playing either the right or left side. Mayo is on the right side in all of his junior highlights.

Mayo is the second offensive lineman to commit this week. Fairmont Senior lineman Zach Frazier, who had been previously recruited as a defensive tackle, agreed to come to WVU as an interior offensive lineman.

Mayo is the 10th player to commit to West Virginia in the 2020 class, leaving 15 spots available.
