State firefighting team headed to Oregon

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A 20-member firefighting team from the state Division of Forestry is going to help out in Oregon in case there are wildfires.

“Oregon expects to experience lightning during the next couple of days,” said Deputy State Fire Manager Jeremy Jones in a news release. “The lightning strikes may start wildfires.”

The West Virginia team traveled to Harrisburg, Pa. Friday to join four other Mid-Atlantic firefighting crews. The teams will then fly to Oregon.

“The West Virginia Division of Forestry is trained and ready to aid other areas of the country when necessary,” said State Forester Barry Cook. “States can more effectively save lives and protect property by working together and sharing resources.”

A tour of duty usually lasts about two weeks. This marks the first dispatching of a Mountain State team this year.
