MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Redshirt sophomore offensive tackle Tyler Thurmond, who appeared in three games in his West Virginia career, has entered the NCAA transfer portal.
Thurmond was a three-star prospect out of Buford, Ga. who signed with West Virginia in 2017. He saw sparing action in three blowouts in 2018, but that marked the extent of his playing time at WVU.
Thurmond’s situation was not poised to get better next season. The coaching staff is high on redshirt freshman tackles Parker Moorer and Brandon Yates, and sophomore Junior Uzebu served as Colton McKivitz’s backup at left tackle in 2019.
West Virginia’s most highly touted signee is also an offensive tackle — four-star prospect Chris Mayo. Coaches have also expressed an openness to adding another offensive lineman to the class this offseason, whether from a junior college or the transfer portal.
It is possible for players to return to their original program upon entering the transfer portal, as tight end Mike O’Laughlin did last season after WVU hired Neal Brown to replace Dana Holgorsen.
Several departing WVU players are still in the portal. Quarterback Jack Allison, tight end Jovani Haskins and wide receiver Ricky Johns remain in search for new programs.
