The scenario is a simple one for Marshall ahead of Saturday’s regular season finale at University of Texas at San Antonio.
With a win over the Roadrunners, the Herd clinch the No. 6 seed in next week’s Conference USA Tournament.
The game at the UTSA Convocation Center will tip off at 4 p.m., and be telecast nationally on Stadium.
Marshall (15-15, 9-8) enters with momentum following a 94-82 win over Florida Atlantic Wednesday night in Huntington. In that victory, five Herd players scored double figures and freshman guard Andrew Taylor notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Roadrunners (13-17, 7-10) weren’t so fortunate, as they lost midweek in convincing fashion at Old Dominion, 84-59.
As a result of the win over FAU, Marshall is guaranteed to finish no lower than seventh in C-USA. Marshall can also secure the No. 6 spot in the league with an Old Dominion loss at UAB.
The Herd and UTSA met a few weeks ago in San Antonio with the Roadrunners coming away with a 72-63 win. High-scoring UTSA junior guard Jhivvan Jackson scored 25 points and added 10 rebounds.
Marshall’s inside players had one of their worst efforts of the season as the Roadrunners outrebounded the Herd, 67-44 — a figure that included 25 offensive rebounds for UTSA.
Marshall was also doomed by shooting a woeful 21 percent in the second half. The Herd’s leading scorer, Taevion Kinsey, poured in 27 points to lead all scorers and Marshall did a good job in slowing down the Roadrunners’ seconnd-leading scorer, junior guard Keaton Wallace, who was limited to 13 points.
Jackson continues to lead UTSA and Conference USA in scoring, averaging over 27 points per game. Wallace is at 19 points per contest. Senior forward Byron Frohnen is the team’s top rebounder with more than seven per game.
