WVU notifies employees about possible changes due to pandemic

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia University is not planning any further staff reductions or pay cuts, but warned employees their pay and employment with the institution depends on WVU’s financial outlook.

Non-classified faculty equivalent/academic professional employees of the Morgantown, Beckley and Keyser campuses are receiving notifications this week about their employment for the 2021-2021 academic year and the possible effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

Rob Alsop, West Virginia University’s vice president of strategic initiatives, said the institution reserves the right to adjust and reduce salaries as well as require unpaid furlough days, yet this will only happen if needed.

“Further, you will be provided at least 30 days’ notice prior to the University exercising any of these rights,” Alsop also noted.

The university furloughed around 900 workers in May to save an estimated $4 million. Senior leadership also took pay cuts at this time. Athletic coaches and staff also were affected, with 65 workers furloughed and everyone taking a pay reduction.
