Bluefield emerges victorious in shootout at Princeton, 54-40

PRINCETON, W.Va. — Bluefield and Princeton opened the season three weeks ago at Mitchell Stadium with the Beavers prevailing in a defensive struggle, 15-13.

With the scene shifting to Hunnicut Stadium in Princeton, the teams combined for 94 points, with the Beavers winning 54-40.

“You’ve got to find a way to win,” said Bluefield head coach Fred Simon. “Whatever it takes. I would love to win them all 54-0 or 7-0, but you have to find a way to win. That’s football and we found a way to win this time. I thought our defense played better against them the first time but hats off to them. I thought our offense played a little better this time so hats off to us.”

Neither team led by more than seven points until Jaeon Flack’s 16-yard touchdown run with 4 minutes to go put the Beavers up by the final score of 54-40.

“If I had known we were going to score 54 and it was going to be close, I would have been amazed. That’s the way football is. They have a fine football team. They played hard. We played hard. I am just happy to come out on top for the second time.”

Bluefield (3-0) senior quarterback Carson Deeb had three touchdown runs in the first half and then tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the second half. Deeb. Brandon Wiley had a touchdown run and a 78-yard touchdown reception, putting the Beavers up 28-21 early in the third quarter. Wiley caught 10 passes for 203 yards.

“I am very proud of the players for the character they showed. We had 6, 7, 8, 9 penalties on us at different times. We overcame they and I am very proud of them.”

Princeton (1-2) quarterback Grant Cochran completed 20 of 33 passes for 341 yards and 5 touchdowns. Ethan Parsons reeled in 3 of those scoring strikes and caught 8 passes for 183 yards. Amir Powell had a touchdown run for racked up 85 yards on 17 carries.
