WVU Sports Hall of Famer Fred Wyant has died

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — WVU Sports Hall of Fame member Fred Wyant passed away over the weekend. The Weston native was 86.

Wyant quarterbacked the Mountaineer football team to 31 victories from 1952-1955. He posted a 30-4 record as a starting signal caller and led West Virginia to a berth in the 1954 Sugar Bowl. Wyant is the only quarterback in school history to lead the Mountaineers to three consecutive victories over Penn State. A three-time Academic All-American, Wyant was a third round selection of the Washington Redskins in the 1956 NFL Draft.

After a brief professional playing career, which included a stint in the Canadian Football League, Wyant transitioned to officiating. He worked his way up through the ranks as a referee and served 27 seasons as an NFL official.

Wyatt, who also ran an independent insurance business in Morgantown, was named an inaugural member of WVU’s Mountaineer Legends Society in 2016 and he was elected to the WVU Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
