Audio feature story that will run during Saturday’s boys state championship games
CAMERON, W.Va. — It was the shot heard around Marshall County, Charleston, the state of West Virginia and quite frankly — the country.
Cameron’s Maci Neely hit a 3-pointer as time expired in the Class A girls state championship game last Saturday giving the Dragons their first state championship in program history. It was not only the shot but what led to the shot that will forever be West Virginia sports lore.
Following the Dragons’ Ashlynn Van Tassell hitting two free throws to tie the game at 50 with four seconds left, Emilee Dobbs deflected a Gilmer County inbound pass that wound up in the hands of Neely. The freshman would then nailed that three-point shot to give Cameron a 53-50 win over the No. 1 seed at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.
Cameron coach Holly Pettit told the media following the game, “It’s every kid’s dream. Luckily, Emilee Dobbs tipped the inbound pass into Maci’s hands and Maci’s great at that stepback three. “She had not shot the ball well to that point, but we’ll take that three to win the championship.”
Pettit, Neely, MetroNews Sports Reporter Joe Brocato are all featured in a longform audio feature that will play during the boys state championship broadcasts Saturday on MetroNews.
The feature details the shot by Neely, the game leading up the shot, the clutch free throws by Van Tassell, and the pandemonium that ensued — including the play ending up on ESPN.
