Separate shooting deaths under investigation in Berkeley County

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department is investigating two recent shooting deaths.

One occurred Friday morning, according to a department news release.

Deputies responded early Friday to a reported shooting at Touch of Texas, located at 12261 Winchester Ave. in Bunker Hill.

Deputies found Dianta Johnson, 21, of Winchester, Va., had been shot in the parking lot of the club after a dispute.

Johnson was transported to Winchester Medical Center and later died.

A search is on for the shooter.

Meanwhile, a second shooting death from last week, this one in the Martinsburg area, remains under investigation with one person in custody.

Deputies were called just after 9:30 p.m. last Tuesday, May 3, to a home at 47 Landfill Drive in Martinsburg for a reported shooting. They found Lyle Marpole, 66, had been shot in the chest.

Deputies performed life saving measures on Marpole until emergency medical services arrived. Marpole was then transported to Berkeley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies said Marpole and another man, identified Thomas Cox, 60, who shared the home, were involved in a verbal dispute that turned violent when Cox got a firearm and shot Marpole in the chest. Cox was charged with first-degree murder.

Deputies said they recovered the gun.

Anyone with information on either shooting is urged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 304-267-7000.
