CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A member of the West Virginia National Guard was recognized for achieving “top honors” at a five-day competition in Virginia.
West Virginia National Guard’s Spc. Bret Williams was honored as one of the two best competitors of the Army National Guard Region II Best Warrior Competition held at Fort Barfoot in Virginia. Also recognized was Virginia National Guard’s Staff Sgt. Dan Abbott.
Williams, a 12W carpentry and masonry specialist, was named Region II Soldier of the Year. He is assigned to the 922nd Engineer Detachment.
11 ARNG NCOs and Soldiers representing five states inclduing Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia, participated in the five-day competition, which is made up of a written exam, 13-mile ruck march, Army Warrior Tasks, day and night land navigation, confidence course, combat water survival test and timed multi-weapon challenge.
West Virginia National Guard Staff Sgt. Avery Liller was named a runner-up in his respective catergory.
Winners will move on to compete in the National Guard’s Best Warrior Competition which is taking place in Alaska in July.
