Weirton standoff ends in man’s death

WEIRTON, W.Va. — A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Weirton.

According to Weirton police, Jason Rose died Friday night in an exchange of gunfire with authorities.

Officers had gone to Rose’s home on Pennsylvania Ave. in Weirton at around noon Friday to serve a warrant on burglary charges and a domestic violence protective order. Officers said Rose barricaded himself in the house and refused to come out.

Several hours of negotiations took place and at one point gas was released into the house. A few hours later there was an exchange of gunfire which claimed Rose’s life.

“We attempted to make contact with Mr. Rose and negotiated to have him come outside,” Weirton Police Chief Charlie Kush told WTOV-TV. “Negotiations failed. At one point, multiple shots were fired by him and return fire by police officers.”

The standoff ended at around 8 p.m.

There were no other injuries.

State police are investigating the shooting.
