Nearing the midway point of the Big 12 Conference baseball season, the Mountaineers have climbed to the top of the league after a weekend sweep of the Kansas Jayhawks. WVU won at KU, 16-9 on Sunday afternoon to run their league record to 8-4.
The Mountaineers are tied with Oklahoma atop the conference standings. WVU took two of three games from the Sooners in March. West Virginia and Oklahoma are a game ahead of four teams — Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Cincinnati and Texas.
On Sunday, the Mountaineers (19-12) blasted six home runs against the Jayhawks, matching a mark they achieved eight times in program history. Reed Chumley left the yard twice, giving him a team-best eight homers on the season. Logan Sauve, Sam White, Hedgesville High School graduate Kyle West and Parkersburg South High School graduate Grant Hussey also went deep.
Taking an 11-9 lead into the eighth inning, WVU hit four consecutive home runs to put the game out of reach.
Sauve and Chumley each drove in four runs. Sauve went 5-for-7 and he scored three runs. JJ Wetherholt started in the leadoff spot for the third consecutive game after missing six weeks with a hamstring injury. He went 1-for-5 and reached twice on walks.
West and Morgantown High School graduate Aaron Jamison each went 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Robby Porco earned the win in relief and Max Yehl pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.
WVU visits Marshall on Wednesday, looking to secure a season sweep of the three-game series. The Mountaineers return home to host UCF on Friday.
