Wyoming County woman sentenced for having sexual intercourse with minor

RAVENCLIFF, W.Va. — A Wyoming County woman will spend one to ten years in prison for engaging sexual activity with a minor.

Brittany Kay Morgan, 33, of Ravencliff was sentenced Wednesday for Display of Obscene Material to a Minor, Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor, and for Third-Degree Sexual Assault. She pleaded guilty to the charges on March 13.

Officers said that during the period of August 2021 to February 2022 Morgan engaged in sexual intercourse with a male juvenile, as well as provided him with smoking vapes and placed pornography on his cell phone.

Wyoming County Prosecutor Gregory Bishop said after careful review of all aspects of the investigation the state reached a plea agreement with the defense.

Bishop also recognized the attention the case received from the public.

“This case received a significant amount of publicity from the moment the accusations were made, placing immense pressure on the West Virginia State Police to make a premature arrest,” Bishop said.

He said sex crimes are particularly difficult to prove, especially when a lot of the evidence is located on cellphones and computers.

However, Bishop stated that the West Virginia State Police has his full support in conducting a thorough investigation, regardless of how long it took.

“One of the easiest ways to undermine a case is to rush an arrest without first conducting a complete and thorough investigation. Without a professional investigation, we would not have been able to secure a conviction and bring justice to the victims of this crime. I commend the State Police, in general, and Sergeant Palmateer, in particular, for disregarding the public outcry based on rumors and speculation and focusing on their job.”

Assistant Prosecutor Derek Laxton of Wyoming County served as lead prosecutor in the case. Sergeant Palmateer of the WV State Police investigated the crime.
