Chase Nelson, 32, of Charleston is charged with three counts of wanton endangerment. He’s been arraigned in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department said they got a call about a disturbance in the Coonskin Drive area just outside of Charleston at around 11 a.m. Friday. They learned a man had shot at his neighbor.

Deputies then went to an adjacent street, McCubbin Drive, to speak with Nelson. They found him on his back porch. He fired two shots in the direction of the deputies, authorities said.

“When the deputies arrived on the scene they approached the house and the individual started firing shots,” Kanawha County Sheriff Rutherford told reporters.

The deputies then took cover behind an outbuilding. They were eventually retrieved by the department’s armored vehicle.

“They weren’t able to safely extricate themselves,” Rutherford said.

The armored vehicle was then driven toward the house. Rutherford said Nelson initially refused to come out but then he eventually did.

“It was a little while but he finally came out and surrendered,” he said.

There no injuries reported.

Nelson is being held in the South Central Regional Jail on $250,000. His preliminary hearing is set for June 17.

Deputies said there could be additional charges filed against Nelson after evidence from his house is investigated.

Police officers from various agencies responded to the scene.
