MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Severe weather moved through Morgantown Tuesday afternoon causing multiple reports of trees and powerlines down, leaving more than 11,800 Mon Power customers without electricity.
Meteorologist Shannon Heffern said it was a downburst that hit just before 3 p.m.
“We actually measured winds at the Morgantown Municipal Airport at 58 miles per hour,” Heffern said. “We’re hearing about multiple areas with trees and powerlines down.”
Trees or powerlines were down on Hartman Run Road, closed just past the intersection of Earl Core Road, Earl Core Road near the Mon County Schools headquarters, Easton Hill Road, Ohio Avenue, Powell Avenue, and Fortney Street at Richwood Avenue.
“We’ve got at least four trees down throughout the county into structures at this point,” MECCA 911 Executive Director and Executive Director Jim Smith said.
Smith also reported traffic signals throughout the city, particularly in the Evansdale area, were out due to the storm. Officials remind motorists that traffic signals that are not operating should be treated like a four-way stop.
“We have a lot of traffic lights that are out in that area,” Smith said. “Right now it’s a bit of a rush hour for traffic, so we want everybody to use caution.”
There were no injuries reported.
