Newly-built lazy river will be at center of Summer Fest activities

Pleasants County is bringing energy to a new lazy river.

The newly-constructed entertainment option at the Pleasants County aquatic center will be part of Summer Fest activities this Saturday in St. Marys.

A lazy river is a shallow, winding pool flowing similarly to a gentle stream. The slow current allows people to gently follow the flow on rafts. The aquatic center also includes four water slides, lily pads with an overhanging net, a rock climbing wall, a splash pad with water sprays and a pirate ship with two smaller water slides for younger children,.

Summer Fest will start at noon Saturday at the aquatic center followed by a special GLOW swim from 9 p.m. to midnight. Carnival rides will be from noon to midnight. There will also be live music and fireworks.

Summer Fest has been a dream of several leaders in the Pleasants County community. “The collaboration between so many community entities has been tremendous,” said Pleasants County Commissioner Jay Powell, describing efforts by the cities of Belmont and St. Marys, the local chamber and the county park board and development authority.

Powell also credited the Lycia Fund, created in memory of St. Mary’s native Lydia McGoldrick, supporting the efforts of the Pleasants Area Chamber of Commerce to promote, sustain, and expand small, locally-owned businesses in Pleasants County.

Those organizations “working together to bring a special event of this magnitude could be something very special for our area. We want our community and surrounding areas to experience a special day right here in Pleasants county,” Powell said.

“God has blessed us with incredible resources within our community and we have been blessed with individuals that have tremendous vision for making our community a special destination spot. This event will hopefully give us the opportunity to allow many to experience what many of us know, Pleasants county is a special place to live, work and play.”
