Mohigans look to continue steady progress in fifth season under Sean Biser

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Sean Biser came to Morgantown in the spring of 2020 to lead the Mohigans and after a disjointed first season due to the pandemic, MHS has increased their win total in each of the last three seasons with back-to-back-to-back playoff appearances. The stakes are raised higher as Biser enters his fifth season at the helm.

“Now we’ve got to win,” said Biser. “Honestly, the first year was so messed up the way the whole season went. I think you have to throw that one out. But after that I think we have progressed. These kids have been in our system and they know the expectations. Now it is just continuing to improve the culture in the locker room and get those guys to do the things they need to do. I think we are on the right path with that.”

A large senior class that led Morgantown to a seven-win season last fall has moved on, leaving many younger players in line to take on greater roles at the skill positions and up front.

“We’re a bunch of no-names right now. Last year, you had Bobby Powell, Andrew Phares, Caleb Nutter. But now we don’t have those guys. All these guys are new to being ‘the guy’. They have to step up and take that leadership role.”

Much will be expected of senior running back AJ Thomas. He rushed for 555 yards and 14 touchdowns last season.

“AJ is going to be great for us. He is going to carry the load this year. Every year he probably could have had more carries. But we had so many guys and we wanted to keep tread on the tires so we just kind of managed his carries. This year, he is going to carry the load.”

Three Mohigans are battling for the starting quarterback spot and the competition will likely remain open for a while.

“We could use multiple [quarterbacks], but I would like to settle on one guy. Right now I’ve got three and two are probably a little bit ahead of the third. They are all working really hard. We’ll wait to see what happens when live bullets start flying.”

A handful of new starters will step in on the offensive and defensive lines. Biser says the depth up front is getting closer to where it needs to be.

“I know that I have six guys, seven guys that I think are in the competition for that starting five. There’s a couple more behind them that are right there that are going to give us valuable depth.”

Morgantown also welcomes back one of the state’s top kickers in senior Aiden Stire.

“He is a good athlete. Last year we ran him on two-point conversions and things like that. So he is not just a kicker. He is a pretty athletic kid.”
