HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. — The municipal government of Harpers Ferry says the owners of the Hill Top Hotel have temporarily opened pedestrian access to the promontory overlook for the public to see the iconic “Gap” that was, and will be, the main attraction of Hill Top visitors — where two rivers and three states meet.
The access will be from the corner of Columbia and Washington Streets, pedestrians only, and will be open dawn to dusk. Areas that pose any dangers have been fenced off for life-safety reasons.
Harpers Ferry officials have asked residents who use the overlook not to go around the chain-link fence that has been installed along the streets leading to the overlook.
“We trust our visitors will use appropriate conduct and once again enjoy the overlook view,” the town said in a Facebook post.
It also said the long-talked about project to restore the Hill Top House is close to breaking ground.
It’s been nearly 18 years since the hotel was purchased by Fred and Karen Schaufeld from SWAN Investors, a Leesburg, VA, based company.
