CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. – Members of the U.S. Marshals Mountain State Fugitive Task Force
arrested an El Salvador man wanted on an outstanding warrant in Galveston County,
Texas, for aggravated sexual assault of a child stemming from an incident in September 1998.
The US Marshal’s Service tells Metronews the arrest happened Friday when
Santos Calderon, who is in the U.S. illegally, was taken into custody at the Somerset Village Shopping
Plaza in Charles Town.
Authorities also arrested six other illegal aliens who they say attempted to evade law enforcement as officers who were trying to take Calderon into custody. They were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
US Marshals in Galveston contacted the US Marshals Service Mountain State Fugitive Task Force Wednesday requesting assistance in locating and apprehending Calderon after developing information that he was possibly in Charles Town.
USMS Mountain State Fugitive Task force investigators learned that Calderon frequented the
Somerset Village Shopping Plaza, where the arrest was made.
Calderon has been charged as a fugitive from justice and is currently being held at the Eastern Regional Jail.
“This case proves that fugitives eluding law enforcement can only be on the run so long before their luck runs out,” said Terry Moore, Acting U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of West Virginia. “This fugitive committed the alleged crimes 27 years ago and over 1,300 miles from where he was eventually. captured. I’m pleased our task force was able to locate Calderon, and I hope his arrest brings closure to the victim and Galveston community.”
Law enforcement agencies involved in the arrests include the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Charles Town Police Department, Martinsburg Police Department, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S Marshals Service.
