Belington man charged after alleged assault on Barbour County deputy

BELINGTON, W.Va. — The Barbour County Sheriff’s Department has filed charges against a Belington man after an assault on a deputy.

Deputies said Nevan Himes, 30, of Belington, was in an apartment building throwing objects when they arrived Monday. Himes was allegedly screaming profanities and pounding a large stick on the ground. He allegedly began to walk away from deputies when they tried speak to him.

Deputies said Hines punched deputy in the face when they were trying to restrain him. Once handcuffed, he tried to hit officers with the cuffs and pulled the officer’s microphone and radio off and tried to hit the officer with it before throwing it.

Despite the use of pepper spray, deputies said Himes continued to refuse commands and later got up and walked toward the officer. Himes continued to refuse commands and would not stop approaching the officer he was tased and taken into custody.

Himes has been charged with malicious assault on an officer, destruction of property, and is being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on $100,000 bail.
