Former WVU associate professor indicted in prescription drug investigation

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A former West Virginia University associate professor has been indicted on two counts of conspiracy to commit a felony drug crime by a Monongalia County grand jury.

Jeanette Garcia

Jeanette Garcia, a former associate professor in the WVU College of Applied Human Sciences, is accused conspiring with at least one student to provide and obtain the prescription drug Adderall between January 1, 2025, and August 31, 2025.

Garcia was named in a two-count indictment handed up by the grand jury Thursday on charges of conspiracy to commit a felony drug crime.

The investigation began last Oct. 31 after a student told WVU officials Garcia was conspiring with at least two obtain and provide prescription medication without valid prescriptions. The Department of Employee Relations was planning to place Garcia on leave while conducting a full investigation.

One of the students told investigators Garcia offered to provide the student with medications in her possession. Both of the students turned over text messages that said Garcia asked them for medications she did not have a prescription for.

Police said Garcia communicated with the students both in-person and over the phone about stimulants and pain medications.

Detectives from the Mon Metro Drug & Violent Crime Task Force also conducted interviews that conducted the same information. Detectives then took custody of Garcia’s cellphone they allege held the conversations with her students.

At WVU, she has received awards for her research including more than $100,000 in funding for the “Judo for Autism” initiative.

Garcia has received a doctorate in kinesiology from the University of Virginia and a master’s in biological and health psychology from the University of Pittsburgh.

Garcia is free on a personal recognizance bond. She will be arraigned in Monongalia County Circuit Court in the near future where a trial date will be scheduled.

WVU officials have not responded to a request for comment.
