FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh issued a tornado warning Monday evening for parts of southeastern Marion County and southeastern Monongalia County.
The warning was issued at 6:03 p.m.
The NWS noted the strong circulation that indicated on radar a tornado was developing. “A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Fairmont, moving east at 25 mph.”
MetroNews Meteorologist Bryan Hughes reported there were multiple warnings issued across the area.
“I see an eleven-mile stretch from Farmington to the Fairmont area, just off to the southeast of there, that storm took 30 minutes to cover that entire region,” Hughes said. “We then did see, along that line, some wind damage from trees down, power lines down, and then also some damage to a house or two in the Fairmont area where potentially the tornado touched down.”
Hughes said there was a warning extended into Monongalia and Preston counties, and there was some damage along that path as well. He said MetroNews is still trying to determine if a tornado touched down in those areas.
Several reports from HAM radio operators indicated damage in and around Fairmont.
“AE8K reports several trees down Anderson Ct, Fairmont, Marion County, WV,” one report read.
“KD8FDD reports funnel cloud sighted on ground on Speedway Avenue, Fairmont, WV. Nearby house suffered damage from falling trees,” another read.
