CHARLESTON, W.Va – A Charleston man convicted of traveling to Upshur County to have sex with a 14-year-old girl will serve a concurrent sentence for failure to maintain his sex offender registration.
Brandon Shawver, 27, appeared in Kanawha County Circuit Court on Friday, and Judge Richard Lindsay sentenced him to a 1-5 year sentence, which will be served concurrently with an ongoing 2-10 year sentence for solicitation of a minor via computer. Shawver pleaded guilty to the latter charge in Upshur County in 2023.
Shawver was arrested in Buckhannon in 2022 after police received a tip about a man messaging what he believed to be a 14-year-old girl. Officers said on the same day they were alerted to the messages, Shawver traveled from Charleston “to an undisclosed location to engage in sexual activities with the underage female.”
A parole hearing for Shawver’s Upshur County sentence is scheduled in nine months. Because the new sentence was ordered to run concurrently, that hearing will not be delayed.
