VOLGA, W.Va. — Coal miners in a Barbour County mine were evacuated early Wednesday morning after high levels of carbon monoxide were detected.
Allegheny Met, which operates the Longview Mine in Volga, confirmed that the mine’s monitoring system was set off at around 2:15 a.m. The company said that the evacuation was done as a precautionary measure. All miners made it safely out of Longview.
“The appropriate state and federal agencies were immediately notified and are on site,” a statement from Allegheny Met said. “We are grateful for their prompt response and support and are working closely with them to investigate and evaluate conditions at the mine and determine the appropriate next steps.”
“We are especially thankful for our dedicated employees and their response to the situation,” the statement added. “The safety of our workforce remains our highest priority as we work toward safely resuming operations.”
