West Virginia football has announced the addition of a power conference opponent to its non-league schedule for next season.
On Tuesday, WVU Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker revealed the Mountaineers will welcome Purdue to Milan Puskar Stadium as part of the 2027 slate, which satisfies a new mandate from the soon to be expanded 24-team College Football Playoff requiring all power conference programs to play at least 10 power conference opponents annually.
The date of the contest will be revealed at a later date.
“We are looking forward to hosting Purdue in Morgantown next season for the first time since 1995,” Baker said. “It is an important addition for us, because it now gives us 10 Power 4 games on our schedule, which is a requirement in the expanded College Football Playoff. It also gives us a regional Big Ten opponent visiting Milan Puskar Stadium, which I know Mountaineer Nation will be excited about. With the addition of Purdue, we will have further announcements on our 2027 schedule as we finalize everything in the coming days.”
By adding the Boilermakers, West Virginia will need to remove one of three previously scheduled non-conference home games against either VMI, Ohio or Southern Miss.
The matchup with the Golden Eagles and this year’s contest against Coastal Carolina were added as replacements to a previously scheduled home-and-home series with Alabama.
The Mountaineers were scheduled to welcome Ohio in on Saturday, August 28, followed by a September 4 home matchup with Southern Miss and another one a week later against VMI.
WVU will not make a return trip to West Lafayette, Ind, to play at the Boilermakers.
The Mountaineers have at least one power conference opponent on their non-league schedule annually from 2028-2036.
WVU and Purdue split two previous meetings in 1995 and 1996. The road team won on both occasions.
