HUNTINGTON, W.Va.– Doc Holliday wasted no time throwing down the challenge to Herd fans following Marshall’s 56-14 dismantling of Old Dominion. During his postgame interview Holliday said he wasn’t expecting anything less than a sellout for Saturday’s homecoming game against Middle Tennessee State.
“Our team is excited to get back home. I’d be surprised if this place isn’t sold out. We’re looking forward to having a packed house,” Holliday said just minues after the final gun sounded last week.
The Herd comes into the game a perfect 5-0 on the season and looking for a little revenge against a Blue Raider team that beat it 51-49 last year in Murfressboro.
“The fanbase in the state of West Virginia likes to see good football teams play,” Holliday said on Metronews Talkline with Hoppy Kercheval.
And Marshall has been playing good football. The herd is second nationally with a 31.8 scoring margin. It has outscored the opposition 83-7 in the first quarter and has not yet trailed this season.
The players are also looking forward to a packed house. Marshall has not played a game in front of the home fans since Sept. 20 when it beat Ohio 44-14. Since then Marshall has played at Akron and Old Dominion with a bye week sandwiched in between.
“We’re very excited to get back and play in front of our home fans,” said quarterback Rakeem Cato.
There are several events leading up to kickoff at noon on Saturday. An alumni 5K race begins at 8 a.m. and the homecoming parade will make its way down Fifth Avenue starting at 8:30.
“There’s not a greater feeling in the world than running out there on Saturday and seeing all that kelly green up there in the stands,” said Holliday.
Marshall’s 10-game win streak at home is the sixth-longest streak in the country.
