Gomez Passed Over Again

It’s like déjà vu all over again for Victor Gomez. At this time last year Gomez anxiously waited on the call of a lifetime, the call he had dreamed of since he started playing t-ball. Gomez waited again this year to see his name selected in the MLB draft, but once again Gomez was lost in the shuffle.
Just looking at the numbers The Herd slugger put up in 2010 it appeared he was a lock to get picked.   Gomez was a First-Team All-CUSA selection, hit .364, had a .397 on-base percentage and slugged .664. He also belted 17 homers and drove in 63 runs. His numbers in conference play were even better posting an average of .387.
Not too shabby in a conference that features some of the best college baseball in the country.
Instead of shipping out to some small Midwest town to begin rookie ball last June, Gomez stayed in Huntington getting ready for the 2011 season with The Herd.
However, Gomez’s 2011 season would not see the same type numbers, mainly due to college baseball switching to bats that had a lot less pop in the barrel. Gomez hit just six homers and had 39 RBI this season. The 6’ 1” 215 pounder also had some issues with his permanent move to first base, committing nine errors this season.
Now one of the best hitters to come through the Marshall program must try to make his dream come true the tough way, by signing on as free agent and proving to the scouts that overlooked him that they made a mistake by not drafting him in the first place.
