Boulder kills Boone County man and injures another while pair were hunting

WHARTON, W.Va. — A man was killed and another was injured Monday after a boulder collapsed in the Wharton area of Boone County.

Donnie Barker III, 25, of Wharton, died of his injuries, and Steven Lee Setser, 19, also of Wharton, was taken to CAMC General with non-life-threatening injuries.

Setser went to a relative’s home for help before he was taken to the hospital.

Troopers say the pair had been hunting in a wooded area known as Barrett Wharton when the collapse happened Monday afternoon. They stopped to build a fire under a rock overhang when the heat from the fire apparently caused the boulder to break apart and fall on them.

The fallen boulder was described as being about half the size of a firetruck.
