Morrisey files lawsuit against Petersburg pharmacy

PETERSBURG, W.Va. — State Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is going after another pharmacy that he says has contributed to the state’s opioid crisis.

Morrisey filed a lawsuit Thursday in Hardy County Circuit Court against Judy’s Drug Store in Petersburg. The pharmacy dispensed nearly 1.8 million doses of hydrocodone and oxycodone, highly addictive painkillers, for a three-county region of fewer than 34,000 residents, Morrisey said.

“Every participant in the supply chain must do its part to ensure proper use of these highly addictive drugs,” Morrisey said in a news release. “Anything less places consumers at great risk of addiction and death, a devastating reality already experienced by far too many families and one that must end.”

The lawsuit alleges the dispensing took place from 2010 to 2016 and continued even after the store and several of its workers paid $2 million to bring a federal investigation to a close in 2014.

According to the lawsuit, the pharmacy did not identify suspicious prescriptions.

Morrisey filed a similar lawsuit against a Boone County pharmacy earlier this month.
