Charleston police officer indicted in deadly January crash

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Charleston police officer was indicted Thursday in connection to a deadly wreck in January.

Charleston Police officer Stephen Doss crashed into a car on West Washington Street near the Maryland Avenue intersection on Jan. 4. Dora Clarke died five days after the accident. She was listed in her obituary as 80 years old.

A Kanawha County grand jury indicted Doss on misdemeanor charges of negligent homicide, speeding and an emergency vehicle violation.

Doss, a two-year patrolman with the department, was responding to a call about a man with a knife. He was driving 74 miles an hour in a 30-miles-per-hour area.

Charleston Police Chief Brent Webster previously said Doss did not have his lights or siren activated at the time.
