Oversized load takes apart tollbooth; toll collector taken to hospital

CHELYAN, W.Va — A West Virginia Turnpike worker was taken to a hospital after the tollbooth they were in was struck by an oversized load Wednesday afternoon in Kanawha County.

According to state police troopers, the driver of the truck tried to squeeze the load through a regular toll lane and not the far right lane for oversized vehicles at the toll plaza near Chelyan. One side of the toll booth was ripped off.

A trooper on the scene said the toll collector didn’t appear to have been seriously injured.

The collision took place at around 12:45 p.m. in the southbound lanes. Traffic flow was back to normal by evening rush hour.

Troopers planned to ticket the driver for using the wrong lane.
