Wheeling Park wins Class AAA girls MVB Bank Champions Cup

WHEELING, W.Va. — Wheeling Park captured the Class AAA girls MVB Bank Champions Cup, beating out Parkersburg for the top spot.

The MVB Bank Champions Cup, presented by the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC), recognizes the top performing high schools in the state for their overall athletic and academic achievement.

Wheeling Park (734 overall points) scored a perfect 100 Cup points with a high graduation rate and added top eight finishes in cross country, soccer, cheer, swimming, basketball, tennis and track.

The Patriots’ basketball team made a semifinal appearance at the state tournament, erasing a 15-point second half deficit to beat George Washington 59-49 in the quarterfinals.

Parkersburg, which won titles in basketball and swimming, ended the year with 656 Cup points. The Big Reds were followed by third-place George Washington with 569 points, fourth-place Morgantown with 565 points and Hurricane, which scored 551 points for fifth place.

The recipients of the MVB Bank Champions Cups are selected by a point system that reward the top eight finishers in each state championship sanctioned by the WVSSAC.

Points are earned by finishing first (100), second (97), third (95), fourth (93), fifth (91), sixth (89), seventh (87) and eighth (85). Additional points are earned for the graduation rate of each school: 100%-97% (100 points), 96.99%-94% (97), 93.99%-91% (95), 90.99%-88% (93), 87.99%-85% (91), 84.99%-82% (89), 81.99%-79% (87) and 78.99%-76% (85).

26 of the 29 schools in Class AAA scored Cup points of some kind.
