Will Grier finishes distant fourth in Heisman voting

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Though Will Grier wasn’t among the three Heisman finalists invited to New York, his fourth-place finish  matched the second-best of any West Virginia player.

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray won the Heisman Trophy with 2,167 points, followed by runner-up Tua Tagovailoa (1,871) and third-place Dwayne Haskins (783). Grier amassed 126 points, including four first-place votes out of the 877 ballots.

Washington State quarterback Gardner Minshew finished fifth (122), followed by UCF’s McKenzie Milton (39). The seventh-place finisher, Clemson running back Travis Ettiene (29), was the top non-quarterback vote-getter while Alabama defensive lineman Quinnen Williams finished eighth (27). Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor (26) and Memphis running back Darrell Henderson (21) rounded out this year’s top 10.

Grier announced earlier Saturday that he was beginning preparation for the NFL draft and would not play in the Dec. 28 Camping World Bowl against Syracuse.
