Education forums continue; third event Wednesday in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The third forum on legislative actions to improve education will be held Wednesday at Capital High School.

The West Virginia Department of Education and the Consensus Building Institute began the series of forums on Monday at Cabell-Midland High School. A second event took place Tuesday at Mount View High School in Welch.

The department originally set seven forums across the state to address matters such as funding, school choice and instructional training. Officials announced Tuesday an eighth event will take place at Blennerhassett Middle School on March 25.

State Superintendent of Schools Steve Paine said the decision came after determining the Mid-Ohio Valley was underserved by the forums already scheduled.

“We strive to provide a voice for all stakeholders with an interest in education and look forward to visiting Wood County,” he said in a press release.

House of Delegates Education Committee Chair Danny Hamrick, R-Harrison, said on Tuesday’s MetroNews “Talkline” there were positive discussions around proposals conservatives favor, including charter schools and decentralization efforts.

“There’s just a ton of different policies implemented by the state department that are passed on down that probably need reviewed,” he said.
