KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. — An elderly West Virginia man, visiting North Carolina’s Outer Banks, was struck and killed by a motorist Monday, according to police.
Robert Rawlings, 82, of Weirton, was in a crosswalk when he was struck by a pick-up truck being driven by Harvey Sourbeer, 90, of Point Harbor, North Carolina.
According to the Kill Devil Hills Police Department, Rawlings was legally using the crosswalk and was not at fault.
“He was crossing the road in properly marked crosswalk,” Captain J.C. Towler said in a news release. “The light was green for him to cross and the light was functioning properly. He had the right of way.”
Towler said a friend walking with Rawlings tried to pull him back out of the way before the collision but was unable to do so.
Sourbeer is being held on $10,000 bail after being charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
The deadly collision occurred in Kill Devil Hills at the intersection of Landing Drive and U.S. Route 158.
