RONCEVERTE, W.Va. — Authorities are looking for the source of fake 100-dollar bills recently discovered circulating in the Ronceverte area of Greenbrier County.
According to Ronceverte Police, at least one of the phony bills appears to have been legally printed as training money for cashiers, and therefore is not regarded as counterfeit. It is not illegal to possess simulated currency, but it is illegal to attempt to use it as real money. Victims of such transactions typically do not have any recourse, other than to notify law enforcement..
In most cases, simulated currency has distinctive oriental-style markings on either side of the bill.
Similar incidents of fake money being used in business transactions were reported in Logan County in November 2018.
