DHHR: Active COVID cases increase for first time since early May

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Active cases for COVID-19 increased in West Virginia Wednesday for the first time since May 5.

According to the state Department of Health and Human Resources, new cases outpaced recovered cases by 16.

The agency confirmed 78 new cases in the past 24 hours along with seven additional deaths.

The deaths include a 75-year old male from Barbour County, a 68-year old female from Raleigh County, an 82-year old female from Kanawha County, a 63-year old male from Kanawha County, a 72-year old female from Mercer County, a 64-year old male from Nicholas County, and an 80-year old female from Jefferson County.

Total deaths are now listed at 2,916.

Hospitalizations have increased by 21 in the past week. The DHHR listed hospitalizations at 83 Wednesday.

The dashboard also says 55.5% of state residents 12 and older have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The one dose number of that age group is 66.9%.
