CHARLESTON, W.Va. — COVID-19 cases took a significant jump in West Virginia in Tuesday’s report from the state Department of Health and Human Resources mainly because of a previous delay in reporting.
The DHHR added 700 COVID-19 cases from last week from the eastern panhandle that weren’t originally counted because of a tabulation system upgrade. Twelve new deaths reported Tuesday are also linked to the system upgrade, the DHHR said.
With all the numbers now in, there were 1,339 new cases confirmed (that includes the 700 not previously counted). There are now 7,017 active cases in West Virginia. The 12 deaths added Tuesday include a 64-year old male from Mason County, a 65-year old female from Randolph County, an 84-year old female from Kanawha County, a 77-year old female from Berkeley County, a 44-year old male from Kanawha County, a 79-year old female from Wayne County, a 41-year old female from Summers County, an 80-year old female from Nicholas County, a 79-year old female from Marshall County, a 75-year old female from Cabell County, a 72-year old female from Logan County, and a 79-year old female from Lewis County.
Total deaths are now at 2,990.
Hospitalizations are now at 369 patients with more than one-third of those patients, 127, being treated in intensive care.
The daily alert system map shows Berkeley, Barbour, Wetzel, Wood, Clay, Logan and Wayne counties in ‘red,’ showing a high rate of spread. The DHHR said only Summers, Wirt and Tucker counties are in the ‘green’ low-spread category.
Ninety percent of those 65 or older in West Virginia have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Those 12 and older who are fully vaccinated remains at 57.5%.
