EPA awards grant for Dinsmore Tire site clean up

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a grant to the Morgantown Utility Board to clean up the former Dinsmore Tire location.

The site, located on Don Knotts Boulevard, was the location of a crude oil pump station in the early 1900s. It was later the location of a tire shop between 1956 and 1999.

Tests show the site is contaminated with volatile organic compounds, heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

As part of the grant, officials will have to conduct 12 quarterly community meetings on the project’s progress.

The EPA awarded 237 grants to more than 220 communities across the country. The grants are valued at $147.5 million.
