Investigation continues after “concerning social media post” connected to Buckhannon-Upshur High School

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — Things returned to normal at Buckhannon-Upshur High School by midday Thursday following a precautionary lockdown earlier in the day.

“We have resumed normal operations at the high school,” Upshur County Schools Director of Safety and Emergency Preparedness Matthew Sisk said. “We are taking some extra safety precautions for the remainder of the day just to help make sure everyone feels as safe as possible.”

Officials said at 7:30 a.m. a report was received that activated the emergency response. Upshur County Schools and Upshur County sheriff’s deputies searched the building and lifted the temporary lockdown just before 11 a.m. The all-clear was given.

“This morning a student reported a concerning social media post that was done last night,” Sisk said. “As a response to that the high school went on a precautionary lockdown.”

Sisk said the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department assisted with response, search and remained at the school for the rest of the school day.

“They immediately responded to the high school and we’ve been working with them every step of the way and we’re glad to have their assistance,” Sisk said.

As with any post, note or threat, Sisk said they will investigate them fully and find those responsible for the disruption.

“We take it very seriously, the safety of our students is a number one priority in Upshur County Schools,” Sisk said. “We have to respond every time we get information, and we do.”
