Investigation underway following deadly shooting in Charleston; Columbus man in custody

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — An Ohio man is charged in a Tuesday night Charleston shooting death.

Dominick Curtis Gray, 38, of Columbus, Ohio, allegedly shot and killed a woman at a residence on Lippert Street at around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Charleston Interim Police Chief Scot Dempsey said when officers arrived on scene they found the woman, identified as Beverly Hensley, 34, of Charleston, dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said a 9-month-old child at the residence was grazed with the gunfire and is being treated at a Charleston hospital. Dempsey said the child’s condition is not serious.

Dempsey added that there is some sort of relationship between Gray and the victim and he believes the woman was the mother of the child.

Chief Dempsey called it a devastating occurrence.

“We don’t want to see anyone hurt, especially in this manner and our officers unfortunately have to see a lot of these things,” he said.

Charleston police arrested Gray not long after the shooting. Dempsey said he was taken into custody near Sixth Street and Hunt Avenue within minutes of officers responding to the area.

The fatal shooting is under investigation.

“We classify this as a critical and serious incident and that means all hands on deck for our officers,” Chief Dempsey said to wrap up his press conference Wednesday afternoon.
